Footage of Porsche’s latest FIA GT3-spec contender tearing up the course at Monza has made its way onto the Internet, and it is, in fact, as glorious as you think it’s going to be. Details of the new racer have not been finalized, but history points to engineers using the 911 Cup car is a starting point and adding additional grunt, grip, and stopping power from there.
Last year, Head of Porsche Motorsport Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser told Sportscar365 that “it will not take long” to see Porsche’s new 991-based FIA GT3 car.
Despite that prediction, we found out earlier this year that the car would be delayed until 2016. Porsche had initially planned to debut in the first half of this year, possibly as a two-car factory effort at the 24 Hours Nürburgring endurance race.
“We wish to take our time and do things the best way possible. In 2016, part of the current GT3 fleet will be renewed. The timing of the racing plans is not yet finalized,” Walliser stated. The Porsche Motorsport boss reportedly could not confirm as to whether or not the GT3-R would make its debut at the 2016 Rolex 24 at Daytona – the first race in which full FIA GT3-spec cars will be eligible to compete in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.
Meanwhile, we’ll have to make do with this clip of what looks to be a near-finalized test mule flying around the famed race course. You’ll want to turn up your speakers for this one.
