The action comedy “Stripes” introduced the world to the weaponized GMC motorhome, zany enthusiast Britt Palmer is unleashing the top speed GMC motorhome to a waiting world. Palmer has no movie deal but his wicked black 600 horsepower 1977 vintage RV will certainly be first to the campsite. This ain’t Grandpa’s motorcoach.
As is the case with many epic endeavors the inspiration came at a low point. Back in June of 2010, Britt was found out he had Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT) disease, a neurological disorder that weakens nerves in the arms and legs, and over time can reduce their ability to function. He needed something to sink his claws into and after going cross-eyed on Craigslist he had spent real American dollars on a GMC and a dream… set the land speed record for motorhomes.
The project started with calls to his makeshift crew. Friends Dennis McCarthy of the Fast and Furious series and Luke Richards from Lucra Cars helped chart a course of action. Building the world’s fastest motor home doesn’t happen every day and there is no sure blueprint. After three years
Palmer’s titanic ‘MoHo’ land speed record RV made its debut at Speed Week 2013 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. It posted a speed that was 7.8 mph short of the then record holder. In the interim a Fiat Doblo camper has raised the bar to 141.3 mph. Palmer and his peeps say datalogging indicates they have the Fiat covered by four mph, but such matters are settled on the salt not in cyberspace. We’ll stay tuned to Speed week 2015 and let you know how it goes. In the meantime here’s a video of the GMC previous test & tune exploits.
