When built reliably, the SR20 is a stout little engine. It will definitely pay dividends on the track, and this S13 240SX powered by a 1,000 hp SR20 is a great testament to that.
PJ, the owner of and driver of this angry little S13 Coupe has been through quite the journey getting it into the 8-second quarter-mile range. With an SR20VET under the hood retaining the factory block and crank, the four-cylinder mill was outfitted with forged internals, and a large 71mm turbocharger. In 2014, PJ managed to break into the 8-second range while using an H-pattern five-speed gearbox, reaching a personal best of 8.54 at 164.21 mph.
When PJ wanted to upgrade the car for the long haul, the crew over at Advance Motor Mechanics installed a huge 76mm Precision turbocharger and a Haltech 2500 ECU. The biggest improvement to the car, however, was the addition of an OS Giken OS-88 six-speed sequential gearbox. Tuned on E85 with a boost pressure of 43 psi, the SR20VET transmits all 948 horsepower through the OS Giken transmission to a GT-R rear differential and driveshafts. Did we mention this SR20VET redlines at an astronomical 9,800 rpm? Well, now’s a good time to mention that, because who doesn’t love high-revving engines?
PJ and the Advance Motor Mechanics crew tested the car on the quarter-mile and the half-mile, with their biggest challenge being traction using the moderately skinny drag slicks. In the quarter-mile, with the new OS Giken transmission, PJ’s best time was an 8.98 at 160.67 mph. As far as the half-mile goes, PJ’s best time was a 19.8 at 192 mph. As he obtained an 8.54 ET in the quarter with the H-pattern five-speed gearbox, we think that with a little development time, PJ could best that effort, and then some. We’ll keep an eye out for a follow up video!
