For those off-roaders not familiar with the extraordinary and exciting Ariel vehicle called the Atom, the all-new off-road ready version of the buggy-like race car will no doubt bring the name Ariel into their vernacular. According to Autocar, the Nomad will be unveiled in January of 2015, and will feature good ground clearance, a long-travel suspension, flotation-style off-road tires, and a full cage for occupant protection.
The Nomad, seen roaring down dirt roads in the “>video above, is based on the Atom’s ladder-style frame, but with chassis reinforcements, and A-pillars for the standard windshield. Like its Atom sibling, the Nomad will also feature a wide-track, four-wheel-independent suspension, and a four-cylinder Honda engine in a transverse mount. The engine is said to be about a 2.4-liter powerplant with 200 hp and healthy low-end torque.
Tucked up to the engine is a Honda manual six-speed transmission, and a limited-slip differential for the rear end is standard. The lightweight construction of the Ariel Atom is retained in the Nomad, and the off-roader is expected to weigh just a little more than 1,500-pounds. In other words, the Nomad will have something around four times the power-to-weight ratio of a typical compact SUV.
Final specifications and pricing were not available at the time of this report, however the entry-level Nomad’s cost will likely be about the same as the Atom’s base price–approximately $45,000 U.S. currency. Many options and upgrades are available, and Ariel expects to begin accepting orders in January with typical delivery of the hand-built off-roader running about six months.
