Nuthin’ But A G Thang: Expedition Motor Company 250GD “Wolf” G-Wagen

“Our goal at Expedition Motor Company is to do one thing, and one thing only” says the company Founder, Alex Levin. That is a bold statement from any company, even more so when it refers to “flawlessly restoring and reimagining” one of the most iconic off-road utility vehicles in the world, the Mercedes Geländewagen. With the 40th anniversary of the G-Wagen upon us, EMC has unveiled a line of former military used 250GDs. The “Wolf” Series is marked by this first vehicle in the line, the “Silver Wolf,” a two-door soft top finished in Mojave silver paint.

Taking a former military vehicle to a fully restored luxury off-roader is quite the undertaking. Expedition starts off with a full tear down, taking the trucks down to bare frames for media blasting and rebuilding from there. New lines and mounts are added and then the rebuilt axles and drive components are fitted to the chassis. Suspension components are updated to modern components as well the braking systems. The roller is then ready to receive its refreshed 2.5-liter diesel engine and is mated to a rebuilt OE five-speed manual transmission.

The body of every Wolf restoration receives a similar teardown to the frame, taking each panel to bare metal. The cabrio styled body is then rustproofed and painted in the customer’s choice of factory or updated colors. Final assembly includes a meticulous inspection for fit and finish, ensuring all body lines and gaps are to the tightest of tolerances. Additional styling options are then fitted, such as aftermarket bumpers, winches and lighting packages. A new full-length black fabric top and matched bikini top finish off the exterior.

Inside the Wolf is a mix of restored and new panels. In the “Silver Wolf,” the brown vinyl interior is highlighted with orange stitching to provide a durable yet updated feel. Custom-stained oak panel cargo slats are installed, as well as match side paneling. The interior is then updated with modern electronics to complete the cabin.

In all, EMC has lived up to its singular focus and delivered a line that truly pays homage to the 40 years of the G-Wagen. A beautiful blend of old and new, the series has taken a vehicle intended for the rigors of military service and given it a place on the road and on the trail. With the Wolf series in full production, you can add a customized Wolf to your stable for around $90,000.
