Meet Mammoth Overland’s New SKL: A Rooftop Camper Revolution

Forget everything you know about rooftop tents. Go on, we’ll wait. Done? Now check this out, Mammoth Overland has just unleashed what it calls the SKL (“Skull”). The SKL is a next-generation rooftop camper concept that brings rugged durability, off-grid power, and all-season comfort to the roof of your rig. This isn’t just a tent on top of your 4×4, it’s a fortress you can sleep in.

Built for the Wild

The SKL is engineered with painted high-strength aluminum from top to bottom with not an ounce of tent material to be found. It’s fully enclosed, boasts an impressive R5 insulation rating, and is built to take a beating on the trail. Compared to the near-zero insulation (R0) of traditional rooftop setups, the SKL sets a whole new standard for year-round overland travel keeping you cozy in the dead of winter or the heat of summer.

More Than a Rooftop Camper — It’s a Mobile Power Station

At the core of SKL’s tech-forward design is a 208-amp-hour solid-state battery pack tucked right into its roof. It’s solar-ready out of the box, with wiring in place for panels that mount to the 500-pound capacity roof rack. Whether you’re lighting up camp with the auxiliary flood lights, running interior LEDs, or powering a fan for ventilation, SKL’s dual Renogy 104Ah lithium-ion batteries have your back. Shore power compatible? You bet. With the right solar panel arrangement this camper is basically a portable power plant.

This Rooftop Camper Sleeps Like a King (Literally)

The SKL measures 89 inches long by 59 inches wide. This provides enough interior space to rival a king-size mattress in length, and wide enough for two adults to sprawl out in comfort. Add in the three-speed roof fan, porthole-style side windows, and dual light strips, and you’ve got a space that feels more like a boutique hotel than a backcountry bivy.

No Overland Trailer? No Problem.

If you’ve ever lusted after Mammoth Overland’s trailers (HV, ELE, TL, or WLY) but don’t have the space to park one, the SKL might be your perfect match. As Mammoth’s President Scott Taylor puts it, “We wondered, ‘What if a trailer and rooftop tent had a baby?’ SKL was born.”

This is Mammoth’s vision for ultra-compact, go-anywhere camping — the power and comfort of a trailer, without the hitch.

Coming Soon to Overland Expo West

Want to see the SKL in person? Mammoth Overland is rolling out the SKL concept at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona, from May 16–18, 2025. Stop by Booth L26 to get up close and personal with the future of rooftop camping.

The production version is expected later in 2025, with final specs and pricing to follow.
