We’ve all seen the rally videos where the driver makes it two turns and crashes or it’s a snippet taken from a high-speed section of a stage and things go awry… and flying from the car as it tumbles helplessly out of frame. But what about the success stories? The beauty of the World Rally Championship shines its brightest when things go right. Sure it’s more of a time investment but to see and hear what goes into an 11-minute rampage on twisty roads, through villages, and up mountainsides is time well spent in our book.
Case in point, this video from the WRC captured at the recent Rallye Monte Carlo, the season-opening event of the 2015 World Rally Championship campaign. You’re riding shotgun, via a dash cam, with hot shoe Robert Kubica behind the wheel of his rally-prepped Ford Fiesta RS. He has the hammer dropped and is really moving, at times the Ford sounds like it’s in its highest gear. The most amazing scenes are when Kubica comes into a village. The road always seems to tighten up as the consequences if he goes off skyrocket. There were a few close calls during the stage but nothing to get the blood pressure of someone as accomplished as Kubica up too high. The road did seem to ascent into the snow but even that didn’t seem to faze the Pole as he tallied a second place finish in the stage, finishing two seconds behind Sébastien Loeb, who holds nine consecutive World Rally Championship driver’s titles. That’s a job well done.
