From time to time, we like to bring you a video that highlights a spectacular crash along with a great storyline. At the 1990 Knoxville Nationals Doug Wolfgang was returning to Knoxville after dominating the event in ’89.
However, 1990 would not be kind to Wolfgang. In the video above you can see how his Knoxville Nationals started with a vicious crash in his heat race. While the crash doesn’t look that intense, remember this is a time before full containment seats and head and neck restraint devices.
Even after loosing a driveshaft the next night, Wolfgang made a remarkable run on Saturday to make the main event that we might never see again at Knoxville.
Wolfgang’s run through the main events:
- D Main: Started 6th finished 1st to advance in the C-main
- C Main: Started 19th, finished 2nd to advance in to the B-main
- B Main: Started 20th, finished 1st to advance in to the main event.
- A main: Started 21st, passed 16 cars to finish 5th.
After nursing home a fifth place finish in the main event the ever gracious Doug Wolfgang praised race victor Bobby Allen, “My hat’s off to him and I’m glad that if I couldn’t win it, I couldn’t figure out a better guy deserving the win.”
When it was all said and done Doug Wolfgang passed an amazing 57 sprinters on Saturday night en route to his fifth place finish.
