One of the most sought after victories in all of the Southeast has to be the Blue-Gray 100. The annual event held at Cherokee Speedway is in it’s 23rd year of exsistence and pays a staggering $25,000 to the winner. Names like Scott Bloomquist, Donnie Moran, Jimmy Owens, and Mike Marlar have all claimed a victory at the annual race.

Back in 1997, under the STARS sanction, the speedway saw an incredible 48 cars show up for the race. During qualifying Ed Basey turned a very respectable first lap of a 19.0 and was trying to pick up a little more on his 2nd lap when he entered turn three a little to high and a little to fast and the right rear caught the fence. This turned his ride head on to the fence, and sent him on a wild ride out of the speedway.

Luckily Basey wasn’t injured and can be heard laughing after the accident in the video. His car wasn’t as fortunate, his team would be forced to  break out a back up car. However, Basey would miss the main event. Clint Smith would go on to win the ’97 Blue Gray 100 over Ronnie Johnson, and Ricky Weeks.
