While the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost is a fascinating car, it’s not Ford’s first attempt to turbocharge a four-cylinder Mustang. Turbo Mustangs were appearing as early as 1979, and in 1984 Ford introduced the SVO package, which lasted until the end of the 1986 model year.
The SVO focused more on handling and lighter weight, rather than the brute force torque of the GT, using a turbocharged 2.3 liter engine that made nearly as much power as the GT of the day. The downfall of the model was twofold. Many Mustang diehards of the day, as well as buyers looking at cars like the BMW 3 series, for which the SVO was intended to compete with, weren’t accustomed to the idea of a Mustang without a V8 as a performance car. The second was the price, the SVO, with options, was often priced well above a Mustang GT or LX 5.0. That made the car a hard pill to swallow for many.
Today the SVO is better understood, and not only enjoys a cult following, but is becoming collectible. Well preserved examples often come with a premium price tag. This recent Craigslist find is a prime example of a well preserved SVO, at a bargain price.
While the mileage is not low, at 101,000. The car itself appears in very good condition, and the owner is offering documentation of services for the past 27 years. The owner lists only minor electrical issues with the fog lights and radio, and the interior and exterior both look to be in excellent condition. The only modification is a boost controller, which is also makes this SVO a rare find these days.
The asking price is $5,900, which is about market value for a car in this condition. As Fox body Mustangs of any variety, that are well preserved become increasingly rare, a car like this has potential to increase in value in years to come.
What do you think? Is the SVO one of the next big collectible Mustangs?
