Burnout Mayhem: Aussies Make It Look Like Fun!

Burnout contests are developing a following all their own, especially down under! Modifiedcarforums.com has posted a YouTube video of “Burnout Mayhem” which took place earlier this year on “Good FryDay” (get it) at Sydney Dragway

Events like “Burnout Mayhem” combine big horsepower, tortuous tire-shredding, and catastrophic engine failures with barely controlled automotive gymnastics similar to drifting. Think of it as a high-performance interpretive dance with opportunities for an asthma attack or financial injury thrown in for giggles!

Fire abounds at these tire torture sessions, but check out the debris covering the driving surface. It's almost like it's snowing rubber!

The burnout is a different thing to different people. It is the tire warming ritual that is the staple of any drag race. It’s also one of the great ‘look at me’ stunts that people attempt with their cars and trucks. However this visual evidence suggests that the Aussie’s interpretation of a burnout contest is far different from the static tire cook-offs normally seen at local car shows.

Lke any other contest of performance, the opportunity for broken parts or bent sheet metal are a common occurrence. At least at these competitions, there's more excitement than just exploding tires and breathing toxic smoke.

It’s difficult for many of us to understand the logic behind trying to make your tires vaporize without racing down a drag strip immediately afterwords. Risking broken parts, and large automotive investments just to produce a big cloud of smoke doesn’t seem worth it. But seeing or participating in a burnout competition that includes the excitement of actually driving rather than simply testing the limits of your front brakes might appeal to the Hoon inside all of us!
