“Budget Build:” This C5 Corvette Is A Certified Ripper

When it comes to Corvettes, two words don’t fit the description: budget build. However, if you’ve never owned or worked on a Corvette, you may not know how complex that process can be. These cars are very compact and space limited, and it seems like you are constantly removing stuff to get to the part needed. Oh, and the cost of parts for these vehicles can get pricy, especially when compared to others. So when we were perusing YouTube and saw That Racing Channel with a video labeled “1100HP Turbo C5 ‘Budget Build’ – 6 Speed STREET RIPPER,” we had to watch. As it turns out, the engine in this boosted C5 Corvette was a budget build, well, sort of.

Walid of Carrera Performance is the owner of the 1998 C5 Corvette. As it turns out, the only part of this build on a budget was the 6.0-liter block and the use of 799 truck heads. The iron-block houses forged Wiesco pistons, Texas Speed forged rods and crank, a Brian Tooley Racing Stage 3 turbo cam, and a massive 80mm T6 turbocharger which protrudes ever so slightly out of the hood. Walid says, “It’s a stock 6.0 block and not sleeved or nothing, but it’s done up on the inside.”

Another cool aspect of this C5 is the fact that the car still houses a T56 manual transmission built at Carrera Performance. However, the Corvette is on transmission number five. To fix this problem, Walid plans on sticking a Tick Performance four-speed face-plated transmission in the ‘Vette soon. At the time of this video, Walid utilizes a McLeod twin-disc clutch but intends to make a change with the four-speed swap.

Whether you agree that this is a “budget build” or not, it’s hard to argue that this C5 is not a ripper. The current combination on low boost makes 750-800 horsepower. When turned up, this LS cranks out an impressive 1,110 horsepower. Although Walid admits that the car gets a little wild at that horsepower level, it isn’t from a lack of effort. He did add BMR’s 15-inch brake package that made way for the 15-inch V-series Weld wheels and Mickey Thompson tires out back.

We’re still not convinced that his Corvette is a genuine budget build, but we will tell you we love everything about it. From the color to the turbo, everything works together to make a killer-looking street machine.
