Pedro Piquet, the driver of No. 6 Autotrac Porsche GT3 Cup car crashed hard Sunday on the first lap of a second race in Goiânia, Brazil. Despite the gruesome looking crash, Piquet escaped the crash with only some bruises on his face, however, it could’ve been a lot worse.
Since the race had just started, all of the cars were grouped closely together, but perhaps a little too close for comfort. Piquet was coming around a right-hand turn, trying to get on the inside, and bumped into Ricardo Baptista, jolting him enough to where he hit his brakes, which locked up after hitting the rumble strip, sending him into the side of Piquet. It looked like Piquet’s right rear tire touched Baptista’s left front tire, which initially sent his car up on two wheels, and ultimately catching a lip in the grass. Piquet’s car capsized a total of nine times, which is enough to shake anyone up.
Piquet was taken to a hospital in Goiânia where he was kept overnight for observation. As stated earlier, Piquet walked away from the accident with some swelling and bruises on his face. He even released a photo on instagram showing how his face currently looks. As we said earlier, it could’ve been a lot worse. This impressive accident is definitely a testament to how safe race cars are nowadays. The cage around the driver didn’t even deform from rolling over nine times, but the rest of the car is completely trashed.
We’re glad Piqet is alright and currently recovering. The safety that these Porsche GT3 cup cars demonstrate is unreal, in a good way.
Here is some new footage of onboard cameras from some of the cars in the race. It’s easier to see what happened from these angles.
