2015 Mustang By Richard Petty Brings $535,000 To Veterans’ Charity

Few things bring out the best in people as much as the Ford Mustang and charity auctions. When you combine the two though, it’s a recipe for altruism that can really make a difference. Last weekend at Mecum’s auction event in Dallas, a 2015 Ford Mustang made over by “The King” Richard Petty himself sold not once, but twice. After the gavel fell a second time, more than $500,000 had been donated to the Paralyzed Veterans of America non-profit foundation.

2015-petty-2Presented by the seven-time NASCAR champion in a striking black hue with Petty Blue racing stripes, the 2015 Mustang has also been supercharged to over 600 horsepower. There’s also unique badging and other performance upgrades designed to set it apart from the crowd, but the real appeal here was to the better nature of the assembled bidders.

It probably didn’t come as much of a surprise when this unique 2015 Mustang sold for $330,000 the first time around. It did come as a shock, however, when the winning bidder donated the Mustang back, setting off a second round of bidding that only stopped after hitting the $205,000 threshold. When everything was tallied up, the Petty Mustang was good for $535,000 in total donations.

That huge sum can make a tremendous difference in the lives of paralyzed war veterans, and it was high enough to be the top auction sale of the weekend by a wide berth. The next-highest sale was a 1992 Ferrari 512 TR at $295,000, followed by a 1969 Boss 429 Mustang at $250,000 and a ‘57 Thunderbird F-Bird at $225,000. That’s charity at work folks.
