SEMA 2017: Colorado ZR2 AEV Concept Changes The Game

The Chevrolet Colorado has taken the mid-size truck market by storm and it has not let off with the release of the ZR2. The Colorado ZR2 is the most off-road capable mid-size pickup on the market and it just got a step up with the AEV concept.

“Colorado has reignited the midsize segment with class-exclusive features and performance,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Truck Strategy, Performance Vehicles, and Motorsports. “Some customers want even greater capability, and the ZR2 AEV concept and ZR2 Race Development Truck showcase the efforts we’ve made to explore how owners can get even more from their trucks.”

The front of the AEV ZR2 is packed with features ready for an adventure. From LED lights, bumper, and a winch this Colorado will be seeing plenty of dirt trails.

On the SEMA Show floor, Chevrolet released the Colorado ZR2 AEV concept, created in collaboration with legendary off-road manufacturer American Expedition Vehicles. The ZR2 AEV Concept features the 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel engine and a whole host of other parts.

“ZR2 puts an exclamation point on Chevy’s off-road engineering ability,” said AEV founder Dave Harriton. “Our collaboration taught us that Colorado makes a great platform for building an off-road truck that can take you as far out as you want to go, safely.”

It may not look like much, but this ZR2 has plenty of Chevrolet Performance parts on it.

The ZR2 AEV concept has plenty of add-ons which include AEV front and rear off-road bumpers, complete underbody skid protection, expedition bed rack, high clearance fender flares and high-rise snorkel, AEV DualSport beadlock wheels, 35-inch BF Goodrich KM2 Mud-Terrain tires, front and rear high output LED auxiliary lighting, ARB refrigerator/freezer, Equipt aluminum storage cases, NATO-style fuel cans and James Baroud USA awning in the bed
Recovery shackles, Hi-Lift jack, Warn 9.5xp-s winch, and Maxtraxs.

Out back has to be one of our favorite parts of the truck. The adventure rack, storage compartments, and full-size spare tire.

Also featured on this concept are plenty of Chevrolet Performance parts as well. The truck has front and rear jounce shocks, plunging front half-shafts, high-angle upper ball joint and increased stiffness high-angle tie rods, long-travel rear leaf spring suspension, anti-wrap link and rear differential cover, and specially tuned Multimatic DSSV shocks.

It is great to see manufacturers pushing more and more off-road vehicles and concepts out. It could be just a matter of time before we see capable off-road, off the showroom floor trucks at dealerships across the country.
