The focus at the SPEC clutches booth followed a trend that seems to be permeating this year’s SEMA: Subaru BRZ/ Scion FR-s parts. On display, SPEC had their new Low Inertia Multiple disc clutch for the popular chassis.
“These cars have been around for a bit now and are starting to make some real power now, said David Norton of SPEC. “Guys are building the engines and road racing and drag racing these cars a lot now.”
The Low Inertia Multidisc features two, three, or four full-face carbon discs but other friction compounds are also available. These clutches can hold over 1000 pound feet of torque which makes them ideal for high-horse drag, drift or road racing vehicles. And, when it comes to high performance parts, lightweight is the name of the game.
In order to substantially reduce rotating mass, the clutch cover is machined from billet-aluminum and the flywheel is available in aluminum or lightweight-ferrous iterations.
In addtion to SPEC’s extreme high-performance clutches, they also offer more conventionally designed, performance replacement styles such as their stage one through five pressure plate and clutch disc kits. These clutches are for applications that require a slight performance increase from stock, all the way up to dedicated race vehicles.
“We also make a lot of stock appearing-like stuff, for classes that require stock clutch bolt patterns,” said Norton. “We have a cast pressure plate that has an aluminum plate under it. That drops about 40 percent of the weight off the unit.“
