SEMA 2012: SSBC Unleashes Big Brake Kits For Classic Wheel Sizes

Back in the ’60s and even today, musclecars had it all. Class, timeless styling, power… apart from today’s standards of handling the only thing they really lacked was proper braking systems. What was thought to be “good” or “adequate” back then is barely considered safe by 21st century standards.

The only cure was to upgrade with some budget pads and rotors, resulting in minimal improvements. Or you could upgrade to a much larger brake rotor and caliper package that would ultimately require an upgrade to a much larger wheel, usually a 17- or 18-inch wheel diameter.

We’ve designed these brake kits to kit behind the wheels of musclecars ranging from 14- to 17-inch sizes. -Michael Jonas

But to those traditionalists still hell-bent on not conforming to change, Stainless Steel Brake Systems (SSBC) has just released a brake kit that will allow the use of a 21st century brake upgrade to fit behind a vintage 15-inch wheel, common to those found on cars from the ’60s and ’70s.

We caught up with Michael Jonas at the SSBC display during this year’s SEMA show, and he was more than happy to tell us all about it. He walked us through each brake kit, explaining what they had to do for each application from Ford, GM, and Chrysler vehicles.

Depending if you’re rolling on 14- or 15-inch wheels, SSBC has the kits you need to improve your stopping power, while maintaining a stock look with your factory-sized wheels. They directly replace the factory drums, and incorporate some of the original designs from the OEM’s.

As you can see in this photo, SSBC's new classic musclecar brake kit fits behind a factory 15-inch Chevrolet Rallye wheel.
