Last week we published the news regarding South Dakota’s Park Jefferson International Racetrack relaunching their 2020 season with their version of the Open Wheel Nationals. The race ran as promised but it was not your typical Saturday night dirt track affair. Being the only game in town, or the nation for that matter, all eyes were cast upon the event.
The track was not open to spectators, only racers and their crews/guests. Despite this, it was one of the most heavily watched races of the season. The race was live-streamed by SpeedshiftTV.com, one of the motorsports leading live-streaming service providers in the country. Fan response was so great that the initial stream was bogged down by the number of subscribers.
The service was quickly fixed and despite a couple of short rain delays, the entire race was executed to perfection. The broadcast came off so well in fact, the race-starved fans did not complain of the rain delays, and the full program was completed.
In the Sprint Car portion of the program, the evening’s quick time was set by Aaron Reutzel as he set a new track record of 12.692 (just over 113 miles per hour). Heats were won by Blake Hahn (making his 410 debut), Kyle Offill, Scotty Thiel, and Brendan Mullen. Jake Blackhurst picked up the B Main over Cody Ledger and Anthony Fiore.
After a couple of failed attempts at a start, Kerry Madsen and Parker Price Miller led the field. Parker Price Miller took over the lead until a charging Aaron Reutzel got by Madsen, then slid past Price Miller. A caution lap saw the field restart with Price Miller jumping to the lead, only to experience mechanical issues forcing his departure from the track with five laps to go. On the restart, it was Zearfoss who made his move on the high side and raced to checkers ahead of Kerry Madsen, Austin McCarl, Ian Madsen, and Channin Tankersley.
Ricky Thorton Jr. came from mid-pack in the IMCA feature to claim the win with Jeff Taylor and Robby Sawyer rounding out the podium.
RESULTS: 4/25/2020 at Park Jefferson International Speedway, North Sioux City, South Dakota.
