John Urist Makes Big Power With The Weldon A1600-A Fuel Pump

Since fuel is one of the three important ingredients in the combustion process inside an engine, getting the correct amount in the cylinder is critical. As the horsepower levels of the engine increase so does the need for fuel, and if you don’t have a fuel pump that can keep up it will spell disaster for your engine program. To feed his boosted Coyote engine enough fuel, John Urist selected the A1600-A electric fuel pump from Weldon to ensure his Mustang would make the power he needs.

Urist is a certified legend in the world of heads-up drag racing with nine NMRA world championships on his resume, so he knows what it takes to go fast. His current ride is a 2016 Mustang that is powered by a Coyote-based MMR bullet with a Precision turbo adding in the boost. An engine and power-adder combination like this requires a massive amount of fuel to perform well, so Urist made sure to choose a pump that could keep up.

“This pump brings to the table a lot of reliability and the fact it can handle anything you’re going to throw at it. For a streetcar, you can get a control box to turn the voltage down and back up later if you need it as you add more power. For a racecar like ours, we can go all-in right away, so there’s no need to upgrade the pump later,” Urist says.

For a high-horsepower application like Urist’s Mustang, the A1600-A can really flow the race gas with its large pressure rating, so it can feed any injector you put in front of it.

“The pump can handle a lot of pressure, so what we can actually do is run our injectors at a lower PSI with this pump. When you can run the bigger injectors at a lower PSI it’s just safer all around and allows for more consistent tuning,” Urist explains.
