Video: Porsche’s Tire Deflates at 180 MPH

Because of incidents like this one, I’m slightly surprised there aren’t a greater selection of brown racing suits on sale these days. Autometrics Autosports driver, Corey Friedman, experienced a hair-graying experience when practicing for a Porsche Club of America event at Daytona. Nudging 180 mph on the banking, with the walls very near, one of his rear tires decided to let go, destroy much of his 997 Cup Car’s bodywork, and put him in a serious sphincter-loosening situation.

Fortunately, Friedman’s masterful control of the situation kept him out of the walls, though it was a close-run thing with the Cup Car’s backside slithering wildly and not offering much in the way of braking. Yet, he wasn’t completely out of danger though he’d avoided clouting the cement barrier.

Though Friedman managed to keep his Cup Car off the walls, he still had some quick cars on a hot track to contend with.

Not as fortunately, Friedman’s inability to stop the Cup Car caused him to reenter the hot track on the other side of the kink, and likely dazed by the incident, he nearly wanders into the path of a pair of Porsches at speed. Fortunately, his quick hands kept him from a collision, but I can imagine he wasn’t too pleased at how close he cut it then. Based on the way he shakes his head in disbelief once his 997 comes to a complete stop, he must’ve been left with some mixed emotions—and an overwhelming desire to put on a new pair of long johns.
