Is S650 Mustang Production Slated For 2021?

Most companies would love to have an enduring brand with a fanbase dating back over 50 years. Such is the case for Ford Motor Company, where the fervor is building for the impending release of the 2018 Mustang. However, that isn’t enough. People are already talking about its successor  — the 2021 Mustang.

A recent episode of the of the Autoline Daily auto news web series (fast forward to 3:22 if you want to cut to the chase) quotes a report that predicts the S650 build starting in the spring of 2021. That certainly sounds like the future, but it will arrive before you know it.

“In the automotive industry, most automakers generally design an all-new platform, give it a major refresh four years later, and then completely redesign it after 8 years. And that’s pretty much how Ford is managing the Mustang,” Autoline Daily host Sean McElroy said in the report above.

The 2018 Mustang isn’t even out yet, and the buzz is already building about the next all-new Mustang, the S650.

Hard as it is to believe, the S550 isn’t that new anymore and it looks like the S650 will be here in a few short years — at least according to an industry consultant.

“The current generation Mustang went into production in 2014, and now Autoforecast Solutions is reporting the next-generation Mustang will go into production in March of 2021 at Ford’s assembly plant in Flat Rock, Michigan,” Sean added. “We expect to see a major refresh next year, but for all you suppliers in the audience who are on the lookout for future programs to bid on, here’s a four-year heads-up on when Ford will completely re-do that car.”

The thought of what Ford will bring to bear with the next all-new Mustang — which promises to include an EcoBoost Hybrid model — is tantalizing. We can hardly wait.
