Video: Tuned Porsche 993 Battles GT3 RS at the Nurburgring

With the performance this 993 puts on, some would assume it was a classic Cup car. Perhaps it had something thermonuclear sitting behind the rear wheels, or maybe it was covered in featherweight carbon body panels. None of those assumptions would be true. In fact, to call the 993 mildly tuned would be bordering on hyperbole; it’s nothing more than a stripped-out street car with a few go-fast goodies.

Though the GT3 RS is the one wearing slicks and the 993 wearing Federal street tires, you could be excused for confusing the two.

Though the GT3 RS is the one wearing slicks and the 993 wearing Federal street tires, you could be excused for confusing the two.

The go-fast goodies are so few they might as well be ignored. The stock motor has been re-valved and fitted with slightly more aggressive cams for 270 horsepower—that’s simply it. Where the car makes its biggest strides are with weight reductions. Without a rear blower, no air conditioning, plexiglass rear and side windows, RS door panels, and all carpet removed, the C4S weighs a meager 2,650 pounds. A half roll cage adds to some of that, but it’s appreciated weight.

Going up against a 3.8-liter GT3 RS was never going to be easy. After all, the newer car has twice the power! Yet, watch the way Sandro Ziegler—the talented man in the 993—manages to catch the RS in the Karussell. Aided by a little yelling within his helmet and charged up on adrenaline, Zeigler makes his pass with a celebratory whoop. With some style and perhaps a little hubris, he wags his 993’s tail as he makes his way past, before getting crossed up in spectacular style at 3:14.
