Video: A Coyote Swapped ’68 Fastback Mustang That Does It All

When taking a new project head on, we often have a specific outcome in mind – an end goal, if you will. But sometimes, this isn’t always the case. Take our friend John Williams and his ’68 Fastback, for example. Williams’ didn’t have a specific strategy in place when he began rebuilding his first-gen Mustang, but the outcome of the project astonished everyone, including himself.

As our friends at Engine Swap Depot highlighted, Williams’ classic Mustang was spotted at a local Cars And Coffee event by Jordan Phillips, who took those sweet pictures. The car features some pretty serious hardware, too.

A modern 5.0-liter Aluminator XS Coyote crate engine good for more than 500 horsepower sits between the shock towers inside the engine bay of Williams' Fastback Mustang. A modern Tremec T56 Magnum XL 6-speed manual transmission transfers power to a Torsen T2R differential through a set of 3.73 gears.

The finished product features a set of Doug’s electric exhaust cutouts integrated into a Magnaflow exhaust system, while a Griggs Racing front and rear independent suspension keeps this Mustang planted on all four CCW wheels and BFGoodrich tires. Tailoring the finish of this classic ‘Stang comes from a full set of 1967 Shelby fiberglass panels and a classic Gulf Racing livery, which we absolutely love.

Surely this Mustang has the power to hang with some of the modern muscle cars on the autocross; and with the change of a tire and maybe a few suspension tweaks, we’re sure this Shelby could make for one fairly quick street/strip car, too.
