Lamborghini Huracan Performante Teases Active Aero On Nurburgring

The “highest feat at the Nurburgring is coming” has been slated by Lamborghini and we anxiously await to see what exactly that means. The first video released on February 17th was a quick teaser about the Lamborghini on the famed Nurburgring track outlining more details to come on February 23rd. Well, that day came and went and fans were provided another teaser video but this time they show an important change that they’ve made–active aerodynamics.

Toted as “Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva” the new active aero on the Lamborghini Huracan Performante has one goal in mind according to Lamborghini; form an allegiance with air and turning it to your advantage, with one goal: going faster than anyone else. Not a lot is shown in the video, but they show two parts of their active aero, the front spoiler and rear wing. The front spoiler has a built in flap that allows it to open or close, depending on driver input and throttle position. During high speed cornering requiring stability and downforce, the flap is closed. Alternatively, while under wide open throttle conditions seeking the lowest drag and highest speed, the flap opens to decrease aerodynamic drag on the car. This makes it faster in the corners and faster on the straights from sheer grip alone, without adding any extra power.

Side cut away of the front spoiler. The flap is closed on the left, creating maximum downforce. When seeking the fastest acceleration and top speed, the flap can open to decrease drag.

For business out back, the spoiler feature valves that channels air to exit point on the rear part of the wing. For high speed cornering and maximum downforce, the valves are closed to ensure the wing operates the way rear wings typically do–by pushing down. However, the real magic happens when you hit the straightaway and the valves open as air is channeled out the rear edge of the wing to minimize drag and increase top speed. What really makes this unique is that the valve can be opened and closed in 0.2 second, and can open or close independently of the other on both left and right sides. This means that when you turn left, the left flap closes while the right flap opens. Downforce is then exerted on the inside wheel allowing faster cornering speeds.

The rear wing of the Huracan Performante has hollow air channels inside the wing controlled by valves which gives the car maximum control over airflow . When the air valve is closed (Left) the wing creates downforce. When open (Right) air slips out through the wing helping it slip through the air.

No other specs have been released, but it’s been hinted that the Lamborghini Huracan Performante might have beaten the Nurburgring production car track record. Currently held by the Porsche 918 Spyder at 6:57, with the Lamborghini Aventador SV just seconds behind at 6:59.73. All speculations point to the new Huracan Performante being even faster than the Aventador SV so expect a new record holder on the ‘Ring soon. The video ends with “Discover more on 1st March 2017” but most likely that will be another teaser video. If we had to guess, we won’t hear what the official lap time was until the Geneva International Motor Show in the last half of March, so hold your breath–it’s coming soon.
