Pedders Suspension released a video series called “Pedders Virtual Tech Stop” in which they break down the various aspects of vehicle handling and how weight, suspension, and brakes play a role in vehicle dynamics. Led by Neil Crompton, a well known motorsport and racing commentator, we’re walked through the various components necessary to ensure proper braking for your vehicle as it’s modified.
Pedders identifies five key areas that effect the vehicle dynamics; shock absorbers, suspension, steering, brakes, and wheel alignment. Together, these all work in harmony to control your vehicle no matter the conditions, but everything must be designed and balanced to work properly. In this particular video, Pedders Suspension discusses brakes and how weight distribution can have a varied effect on handling. Although Crompton mainly discusses adding weight to a truck, the resulting conditions would be similar to the stress your brakes are under while on the track. Repetitive and hard braking is stressful on components creating lots of friction and heat. Heat in the brakes has to be managed, and Pedders Suspension has a solution to provide consistent, fade resistant brakes.
The correct brake solution is about understanding and managing the right brake hardware and the proper friction material for each application. Utilizing the correct components together ensures that you increase the heat range, minimize brake fade, and efficiently remove gases created by the rotor and pad, which result in reduced braking distances and less brake fade.
Looking at the slotted brake discs from Pedders, cool air is drawn across the surface of the disc while hot air and gases are pushed out. Pedders ceramic brake pads feature a lower metal content as compared to semi-metallic pads. Traditional metal is replaced with heat tolerant copper combined with ceramic fiber material that is ultimately bonded using kevlar resin. The combo of slotted disc and pad greatly improve braking performance over a wider heat range. With 65,000 part numbers over a wide variety of platforms, Pedders has a brake solution for every situation.
