SEMA 2016: Bully Dog Simplifies Tuning And Keeps The EPA Happy

Bully Dog has long been at the forefront of off-the-shelf and custom tuning for half-ton gas trucks, diesel, and the off-road market. We heard that Bully Dog has been working on some new products, so we stopped by their booth at the 2016 SEMA Show to get the latest on the company’s newest performance solutions.

Bully Dog’s new BDX tuner is the next generation in performance ECU programming. The handheld unit features preloaded tunes which shift around the powerband depending on the driving style – covering everything from economical highway driving, rock crawling, and towing, to all out performance.

The BDX programmer also utilizes customizable gauges to easily track and adjust the components that matter most to you. One of the most exciting features to be introduced is the built-in WiFi antennae, which allows the customer or their tuner to take advantage of cloud-based tuning and firmware updates, streamlining the process by adding new tunes without having to mess with extra cables.

Bully Dog also released their dedicated monitor/data logging unit, the 5-inch capacitive touchscreen GTX Watchdog. The GTX’s current focus is on the logging and monitoring needs of the 2013 to 2016 Cummins diesel’s critical engine functions, but Bully Dog plans to expand their compatible applications through next year.

Starting in 2015, Chrysler started “locking” the ECU’s in their vehicles in an effort to prevent the aftermarket from “reflashing” the factory unit. Bully Dog has discovered a solution to this and has included an unlock cable with the GTX handheld. The GTX also ditches the plastic clips that usually hold these kind of units to the windshield or dash, and replaced it with a strong magnet so that you can more easily mount and unmount your unit as needed.

Last but not least is Bully Dog’s performance diesel particulate filter (DPF) for the 6.4-liter Power Stroke, which mounts in the stock location and reuses the factory hardware for an easy bolt-on replacement. Bully Dog’s performance DPF is 17-percent larger than the stock filter, dramatically improving flow that will net as much as a 30 horsepower increase by just swapping filters, while still keeping the EPA happy.
