While racecars are generally assumed to be built to withstand a hurricane, a loose bolt and a serious headwind can change the exterior of one’s steed quite rapidly. As seen here, the Setra M3-R comes to a comical and certainly unforeseen end when Inge Hansesaetre’s door makes a sudden departure while going down the Nordschliefe’s front straight.
There’s little one can do in a situation like this, and unfortunately, it’s not as uncommon as one might think. Alright, a door making an exit like a unwanted extra in a top-flight Broadway play might not be the most common item lost, but winglets, wing mirrors, canards, and bodywork often get flung away at speed. Especially when close racing leads to door bashing, which has a tendency to loosen what were once hard-fastened pieces.
There’s nothing Inge can do in a situation like this but take the pit exit coming up shortly and wander back to the pits through the exit near Hohenrain. Passing the daunting Bridge corner at 174 mph and then slamming on your brakes to recover the missing piece is a good way to continue losing parts, and like any sensible Norwegian would, Inge continues on. However, he takes a quizzical glance at the recently-shed piece of hardware, barely able to realize what’s happened to his pristine M3. He’ll be sure to secure those doors next time – and double-check the wings.
