It’s well-known that the R33 GT-R is one of the better all-weather supercars in existence – especially when they’ve been tweaked ever so slightly to double the stock power output. By retaining the twin-turbo layout, the RB26DETT still delivers power in a progressive fashion, and that coupled with the immense traction from the ATTESA-ETS system and the manners from the longer wheelbase, it makes for a great road car to be exploited on these sorts of stages.
Set at the free hillclimb in Waldau, a small town just north of Coburg, Germany, this machine shows its strengths primarily in the faster sections, which this course has plenty of. Twin HKS 2863 turbos provide nearly 700 horsepower which comes in one long, steady push. Tuned by High Import Performance GbR, this car keeps a simplistic exterior while being capable of some serious performance.
The standard body has been retained, and only a set of gold BBS LM wheels accent the car’s appearance. Rather understated, one might be surprised to learn this RB26DETT is kept very modest and attracts no attention to itself, yet produces 646 horsepower and 521 pound-feet of torque!
That thrust clearly shows in areas where the Skyline isn’t hampered by a benign understeer and is able to stretch its legs. At times, it seems as if it’s going to snap into a massive slide – but as cliche as it is to say – the electronics kept everything in check. There’s a reason why the GT-R was such a phenomenon in the nineties when high-tech sports cars were coming into their own. Quite simply, it could turn an amateur into a hero.
