Video: Reverse Lockout Adjustment How-To With MGW Shifters

If you’ve ever replaced the shifter assembly on a 2011-plus Mustang equipped with the infamous Getrag MT-82 6-speed manual transmission, then you can probably attest to how much of a huge pain it can be to correctly set the adjustment for the reverse lockout mechanism.

This is an issue the folks at MGW Shifters are well versed on, which is why the company dedicated the video above to helping Mustang enthusiasts correctly set the adjustment on their MT-82 equipped car. George Ciamillo of MGW Shifters says the biggest struggle enthusiasts have when adjusting the reverse lockout feature, is getting the two center pins aligned correctly.

The two pins located on the new MGW MT-82 shifter were there prior to the installation, but they're not so easy to adjust once they've been loosened.

The two pins located on the new MGW MT-82 shifter were there prior to the installation, but they’re not so easy to adjust once they’ve been loosened.

Ciamillo says the easiest way to adjust this mechanism is to start by loosening the larger nut on the right side of the shifter assembly, as this nut locks the pin in place. Once you’ve loosened it, you can begin to loosen the hex nut on the left side of the assembly.

This is where trial and error will prove its ground, as you’ll need to adjust the left pin in order to correctly adjust the reverse lockout mechanism. As Ciamillo put it, once you’re able to shift into all gears with ease (and hard shifting), you’ll want to adjust the hex nut on the left side a quarter-turn, then hold it in-place and tighten the nut on the right side to lock everything together.

This quick hit from our friends at MGW Shifters is a great resource for your next new shifter assembly installation, don’t you think? Check out their YouTube channel for more tech tips and videos.
