Chump Car invites drivers of differing levels of skill. Some are absolute aces, and others are willing to try moves that aren’t really on. There aren’t too many rules in the more jovial categories like Chump Car and Le Mons, and that’s exactly why they’re so enjoyable. However, sometimes, they invite a little recklessness and danger.
There are times to pass and there are times to wait, and sometimes it takes a bit of discipline to find this out. In this instance, the driver of the #999 E36 BMW went for a gap that wasn’t really there, as they weren’t able to slow their car effectively prior to corner entry. With all four locked up and nowhere to run, the BMW driver put themself in a compromised position, and ended up knocking another driver — and nearly one more — out of contention, quite unfairly. It’s certain that they didn’t make any friends at Brainerd International Raceway that day.

There are numerous ways to overtake, but this isn’t one of them. What the BMW driver should’ve considered is waiting for a more opportune time to pass when their specific section of racetrack was less congested. After all, the E36 BMW is one of the quickest platforms available in this category — so much so people are trying to legislate them out of competition — and the torque available is enough to pass a Miata or a Honda Civic down the quicker sections of the track.
Where the class of the field remained was with the driver of the camera car — a classic Golf GTi. Not only was his braking on the limit — note the shimmy in the steering wheel in the braking zone — but he negotiated the caramboulage quite well — and sent a wonderful message to the offending driver. That, my friends, is how one races.
