The amount of goodies thrown at YouTube journalists like Sam, better known as Seen Through Glass, is astounding. Many gearheads would sell a vital organ for a quick lap in a 488 GTB, and here, Sam gets chauffeured around by a four-time World Champion. The life of a YouTube car nut is a glamorous one.
Riding alongside the affable German always seems to put a smile on everyone’s face. Not only is the man stupendously quick and capable, but an effortless enthusiasm and sense of humor seems to come through, which might be why the public perception of Vettel has changed somewhat since his move to Ferrari. He just seems more relaxed than he ever was with Red Bull.
Nevertheless, the man piloting the car is not afraid to grab the newest turbocharged Ferrari by the lapels and give it a good thrashing. Spinning the tires across the wet runway at Bruntingthorpe, drifting with barricades nearing the car’s wide haunches, and leaving the braking mortifyingly-late, this is not any walk in the park.
What stands out most about this car is the torque and the muted engine note. It simply eats the road up in the first few gears, and every prod of the throttle hurls Sam, Seb and the Ferrari closer to the horizon. Compared to some of the modern, normally-aspirated Ferraris, this turbo engine seems more usable without the need to rev the engine to the moon to make power.
Unfortunately, that torque comes with a price. As Seb notes “the sound always gets lost with turbos.” The famous, raucous shriek is replaced by a dulled bark accompanied by some very subtle turbo whistling. Yes, quieter exhaust notes on a Ferrari might top the list of first-world problems, but it still counts for something, especially since these cars have to stir the driver and the observer. Thankfully for the latter, it sounds much better from the outside.
