In the Boss GP series, gentleman drivers bring out some of the quickest, if slightly outdated, single-seaters from around the world. Formula One machines, Indycars, Champ Cars and more formula beasts make up the ranks, and despite the drivers being a bit older, they still compete like there’s big money on the line. At times, the red mist gets the best of all of us, even the wiser guys, and when they’ve got 700 horsepower or more at their disposal, the resulting incidents are frightening.
The camera car is a repurposed Champ Car built by Panoz. Known as the DP01, this machine was used for the series’ ultimate season in 2007-2008, and while in official use, used a Ford Cosworth 2.65-liter, turbocharged V8, known as the XFE. In this particular event, the turbocharged motor has been replaced with a Judd 4.2-liter V10 making north of 600 horsepower, which becomes readily apparent whenever the throttle is depressed and the sleek Champ Car rockets down Monza’s straights.
The problem with quick tracks like Monza in a car with gobs of power is that one little mistake tends to get magnified if it happens prior to a straight, of which the Italian venue has many. Austrian Peter Milavec, the man in the DP01, compromises his entry into the all-important Lesmo 2 by entering on the inside, presumably taking a defensive line against the Benetton F1 attacking from behind. Milavec’s run through the corner is very slow, and not surprisingly, the Benetton begins to mount a charge, poking his nose in shortly thereafter.
While the gap the Benetton was going for was never wide enough to fit through, it seemed as if Milavec paid little attention to the car out-dragging him down the long straight. Call it a racing incident, or an instance of brain fade, but whatever you call it, don’t call it a small mistake. As the two gorgeous racing legends disintegrate and lose their bodywork like Michael Bay’s directing, one can’t help but think of the enormous bill this hiccup caused. Oh well, schadenfreud is a German word, right? That’s spoken in Austria.
