Sam Schmidt and the Arrow Electronics guys are at it again.

Schmidt will pilot the Arrow Electronics Corvette Z06 up Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this weekend, following up his record-breaking run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Schmidt, a former Indy car driver and now heading Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team, has been a quadriplegic since he crashed at the Walt Disney World oval back in 2000.

That’s not stopping him from getting “back on the horse.” In May of this year, Schmidt lapped Indianapolis Motor Speedway at 108.642mph and reached a top speed of 152mph driving the Arrow Electronics Semi-Autonomous Motorcar (SAM.)

He’ll use head movements and sip-n-puff technology to pilot the car– the same tech used to navigate the famed Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

Schmidt will tackle the 12.42-mile 156-turn course to Glen Cove and will then lead a parade of cars down the mountain. His co-driver for the event will be nine-time Pikes Peak class winner and four-time King of the Mountain champ, Robby Unser.

Arrow Electronics out of Colorado, is sponsoring the 100th-anniversary race of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 26. The so-called “Race to the Clouds” is the second oldest motorsports race in the United States and a long-standing Colorado tradition.

The objective of the SAM project is to get disabled folks back in the driver’s seat. All of the software and technology is open to the developer and engineering communities, and ultimate goal is to facilitate independent living.
