In the immortal words of the late Bruce Lee, “Be formless, shapeless, like water. If you put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend.” There are few things more important than adaptability in fighter’s realm – and it’s likely the owner of this Supra agrees with this adage. Aptly named Boost Lee, this JZA80 monster might lack traction when compared to the four wheel-drive competition, but it makes up for any lack of grip with outrageous speed and the odd ace up its sleeve.
Its power comes from a built 2JZ fitted with a Precision 8685 turbocharger. With a dab of NOS to get that hefty snail spooled, the power curve is reasonably smooth for something like this. Nevertheless, it’s no small task to put that tarmac-melting torque – nearly 1,200 lb/ft of it – to the pavement without the giant balloon slicks spinning up into a plume of blue-grey smoke.
Obviously, there’s no shortage of power with this machine from Titan Motorsports, but the traction advantage offered by the Lamborghinis and Porsche put Boost Lee at a disadvantage. Thankfully, the format caters slightly to the Supra’s layout, whereby the cars roll to 60 before getting on it. On low boost and without nitrous, the car was trapping an impressive 178 mph at the end of the 1,500-foot strip – which was 20 mph slower than the fastest turbo Gallardos. To win, they had to adapt.
To heed Lee’s advice, they reduced the pressure in the tires to gain a little traction off the line and turned the boost up to an astounding 65 pounds. With decent traction and enough grunt to turn the world backwards, the Supra comes out on top against one of the quickest Lamborghinis there. But then, a built 2R Gallardo from Underground Racing arrives – does the Toyota have what it takes?
