Drag racers have been building back-half cars for decades but these strip terrors are more like ‘half a back’ cars… and that’s being generous. It’s a weight savings gone awry scenario as these cut-away racers have very little substance from the driver’s seat rearward. We’re astonished to see what looks like a normal race-ready hatchback sitting on bicycle style rear tires. Heck, some of these creations don’t even have rear hatches or the like, and what sheetmetal there is is potato chip thin.
From what we gather these cars started life as Fiat 147s. They are front-wheel drive and run four-cylinder, all-motor setups and run in the Damonte Racing stable. As you can see and feel in the video, thanks to an ungodly power-to-weight ratio these machines are blisteringly fast. This all goes down in Buenos Aries, Argentina and the video is shot at Recta del Autodromo General San Martin, a road course with a drag strip integrated into the front stretch.
One of the drivers rolls like a Boss. One handed, with his left hand holding the spoke of the wheel, not the rim portion, as he works the gearbox with his right hand. It’s a red car and when the driver looks to back up his POV camera captures the sheer nakedness of these cars. They look to be basic framework with a Fiat like façade tack-welded in place.
The footage also shows a blue car, which we believe is driven by Alejandro ‘Pera’ Mendoza, on the dyno revving to totally absurd levels. The video cuts quickly and car is in the staging lanes at the General San Martin drag strip and after some shenanigans makes a wicked pass.
We love the audacity of these cars and want to share the spectacle with you. What’s your opinion of these cut-away cars? Please comment below.
