It seems like all of the nastiest and bizarre crashes have been in either the Porsche GT3 Cup series, or the Ferrari Challenge series. Although the crash at Road America in 2015 featured Ferrari F430 Challenge cars, it was still one of the nastiest we’ve seen.
The terrifying crash in question happened this past weekend during the GT Tour race at Circuit Paul Armagnac in France. The driver of the red Ferrari 458 GT3, Sacha Bottemanne, was battling for position with a red and black Ferrari 458 GT3 when he collided with said opponent, jostling the rear of the car, and sending him at full speed into a retaining wall.
Upon hitting the wall the car’s front end completely disintegrated, leaving shards of carbon fiber and other components all over the track. Bottemanne hobbled away from the accident, climbing out of the windshield because the rest of the car was too mangled.
We’re glad Bottemanne is okay, but the accident was completely his fault. He came up into his opponent, which unsettled the rear end, causing him to dart across his opponent’s car and into the wall. It looked like he stayed in it because his car actually gained speed before hitting the wall, rather than slowing down. Regardless, the car’s cockpit stayed intact, and the HANS device worked as it was supposed to. GT Tour tweeted that Bottemanne was released from the hospital Sunday night with a few bruises.
This was a bad crash, but we’re sure Bottemanne will be back out on track with a new 458 GT3 in a matter of weeks.
