In the world of Porsche, a few aftermarket tuners turn heads, but Ruf stands alone as its own entity. In fact, some might take offense to hearing Ruf called a “tuner,” because technically, they make their own cars. Though obviously Porsche-based, the German manufacturer take a Porsche body-in-white and build their own machines around them. In fact, all Ruf machines have their own Ruf VIN/Serial numbers, so to avoid landing in hot water with some of their fans, make sure you avoid addressing Ruf cars as hopped-up Porsches.
The fact Ruf has such an ardent fanbase is easy to understand. Though these cars may resemble 911s, in spirit, they share a lot with a boutique manufacturer along the lines of Pagani. The term “boutique” may not fully describe the extent to which these cars are refined, but fundamentally, they’re designed to serve a small niche of passionate car nuts.
On display at Geneva 2015, the collection of cars is mouth-watering. Though Ruf is known for their turbocharged motors stuck within narrow-body 911s, they offer much more than that. The Ultimate is a vintage 930 fitted with a turbocharged, air-cooled, flat-six that spits out something short of 600 horsepower. Pushing forward just 2,700 pounds thanks to plenty of carbon fiber, there’s something otherwordly about the potential of a car like this. Having such performance housed within an understated, albeit bright, bodyshell, and the car does have a degree of “sleeper,” though it’s uncertain many will share that feeling.
The hot rod, road-going 911 could describe most of their offerings, though Ruf has delved into other platforms as well. The CTR-3 builds upon a Cayman chassis, though it’s stretched to house a bigger, turbocharged, 3.8-liter engine that chucks out 800 horsepower. Its proportions give it a look that’s reminiscent of the famed Carrera GT. As far as racing machines go, Ruf has made a few notable entries, and one on display is the CTR 2 Sport. Four wheel-drive, 650+ horsepower and a strange, dual-plane wing make this a standout. It also won at Pike’s Peak back in 1997. It’s an amazing machine that will turn heads — mainly for that incredible, possibly questionable rear wing.
For those who need a special machine in their lives and have the means necessary, Ruf will build a bespoke 911-based monster for about any purpose. Normally-aspirated or turbocharged, four wheel-drive or rear wheel-drive, Ruf can build it. Hell, they can even throw a V8 in the back of a 911 if you so choose.
