One of the more unconventional automotive products to come from famed snowmobile and ATV manufacturer Polaris is the newfangled Slingshot X. Half bike, half car, this inverted trike offers the stability of a four wheel-machine and the strong interaction with the elements one receives on a motorcycle.
Furthermore, a modified Ecotec motor pushing out 400 horses with the help of a vocal turbocharger gets things moving, and suddenly, this oddball becomes a respectable performer. It also helps to have an X Games champ behind the wheel.
In typical Foustian style, the purring Polaris exits the parking garage with the tail hung well-out. Despite having a smallish contact patch in the rear, it possesses a decent amount of traction; allowing Foust to drift a few corners in measured-yet-spectacular fashion. Coilovers, big Coninental tires and, presumably, plenty of suspension tuning have something to do with this promotional special’s composure around the tight streets of San Diego.
Amidst a hissing turbo and the shriek of tires, Foust puts on a spectacular display in this monstrosity, which appears to draw design influence from a stealth bomber and some kind of desert scarab. Those pointy overhangs do look the business, and while this new era of megatrikes hasn’t wowed everybody, the speed and precision this Slingshot X possesses may lead to a few conversions. Sliding through a narrow parking garage ramp is a feat in a car with two rear wheels, but keeping that one tire lit in just the right way takes a special level of precision and confidence that only a rallymeister like Foust can pull off.
