Last year, MotiveDVD out of Australia embarked on a build that nearly every Skyline enthusiast dreams about: installing an R35 GT-R’s VR38DETT into an R34 Skyline GT-R.
With the engine sourced and the transmission built by V8 Supercar transmission supplier, Albins, MotiveDVD installs their massive CC Brakes, and gets their driveline jigsaw puzzle figured out in this installment of their project build. As the 8-piston front calipers and 6-piston rear calipers are a bolt-on affair, the real struggle came about when drivetrain components from the R32, R33, R34, and R35 GT-R didn’t work together. But hey, this is a custom build, and stuff like that is bound to happen. Nothing a little improvising and fabrication can’t fix!

The billet 4.11 ring and pinion, made by Albins, that will match the R35’s front diff ratio to the R32’s 4.11 rear diff ratio.
The drivetrain going into Project Erubisu may look complex, but after taking time to understand the layout, you’ll realize that it is a Frankenstein work of art. The team at BrinTech needs to get an R35 engine and front diff, R34 hubs, R32 transfer case, and an R32 rear diff with mechanical LSD to work in perfect harmony. The problem wasn’t getting everything to fit, it was getting the differential ratios to match. MotiveDVD searched high and low for a ring and pinion with a 3.70 ratio for the R32 rear diff to match the R35 front diff ratio, but had no luck. When they were at Albins getting their sequential transmission built, they made their problem known and it just so happened that Albins had exactly what they needed to make the differential ratios work.
Another problem the BrinTech crew ran into was getting the rear half-shafts to fit. Since the R34 is wider than the R32 the differential and half-shafts came out of, the crew needed half-shafts that would fit right. Luckily, a solution was stumbled upon, and hybrid shafts were able to be made out of R32 and R34 V-Spec components.
This build is definitely coming together well, and the car is going to be a complete monster when it is finished. A lot of props for MotiveDVD for producing this series showing the steps needed to complete the conversion. Not only is it helpful, it’s entertaining. We’ll keep you posted with updates on this mashup of Skyline generations.
