It’s not often you get a chance to ride shotgun alongside one of the quickest drivers in the world. Anthony Dunn, winner of the British Radical Championship, sits in amazement as he’s chauffeured around the Nurburgring with local ace Micheal Vergers driving. Vergers, also known as “The Baron,” is best known for holding the official road car record at the Norschliefe: a stunning 6 minutes, 48 seconds, also achieved with a Radical SR3.
Verger’s butter-smooth driving style is almost deceptively quick, and it isn’t until he comes upon other drivers in impressive machinery that it becomes apparent how incredibly fast he’s traveling. Not only is he quick, but he’s incredibly neat and composed.
Never flustered or hurried, he applies the power with utmost care, making sure the rear end stays under him at all times. Never once does the car get wildly out of shape — only a few suggestions of opposite lock here and there — and only once does he miss an apex. This driving style is the mark of a experienced, cerebral master, not a reckless hotshoe.
Perhaps more interesting than the outrageous amounts of speed on display is the banter between the two drivers. Coming upon traffic often registers a open hand of frustration or a shaking head and conscientious drivers moving aside garners a thankful wave. What remains unclear is the nature of the pantomiming the two engage in on the straighter sections of track. The specifics of this amusing interaction we can only speculate about, but you can rest assured that whatever tips were disclosed, they’re worth a lot of money.
