The original Mad Max drove a wicked high-speed interceptor capable of dominating anything on the road. It had a ratty post-apocalyptic feel to it. If the world hadn’t come crashing to an end Max could very well had found himself behind a sleek, advanced, technology-laden interceptor like this.
This video shows how it all may have gone down. It stars rally legend Jean Ragnotti playing the part made famous by Mel Gibson.
The R.S. 01 is a unicorn of sorts. First off, it takes full advantage of the close Renault Nissan relationship as it’s powered by a 3.8-liter Nissan GT-R V6. The powerplant is built for racing but reportedly develops 500 horsepower which is less than a stock VR38. The car was designed as a spec racer for a Renault-only series that never got any traction. The engine features dry-sump oiling and full race tweaking by none other than Nismo.
Race cars are all about power and weight. And weight is where Renault focused a good amount of attention. The daunting R.S. 01 has a carbon fiber tub formed by Dallara, a body that produces ungodly levels of downforce, and a sick inboard suspension to make it stick in the corners. The car tips the scales at 2,425 pounds, a whopping 1,410 pounds less that the road going Nissan GT-R.
The writing is on the wall, speed testing on the highways of France just got a little more dangerous. If you see what looks like a prototype racer with blue lights flashing from the bumper, don’t run.
We’ve also included some footage of Chris Harris and the R.S. 01 in its natural environment.
