The new year is in full swing if you’re a motorsports fan, with several season-opening competitions just on the horizon. In addition to perennial favorites like NASCAR’s Daytona 500, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and World Endurance Championship also kick off in the coming weeks. It is there that the new 2017 Ford GT will debut under the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing banner, two for IMSA and two for the WEC.
The driver lineup for the WEC team was revealed last week and includes Scottish driver Marino Franchitti, who counts among his accomplishments a first place finish at the 2014 running of the 12 Hours of Sebring with Chip Ganassi racing.
Franchitti has been driving competitively since he was a wee lad, first getting behind the wheel at age 8 and having since competed in a number of racing series. This includes five appearances at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, though 2016 will be the first time he competes in a complete WEC racing season. He’s always been a fan of Le Mans though, and racing a Ford GT gives him his best shot yet at taking home a checkered flag at the fabled race.
“Watching Le Mans on TV when I was young was what made me want to be a racing driver,” Franchitti said. “It’s the biggest race in the world and the one I want to win more than any other. As a student of the history of motorsport, it’s a dream come true to be a part of Ford’s return 50 years after they began a run of four incredible victories. Hopefully we can add our own chapter to this story.”
Franchitti will be joined by Stefan Mücke, Olivier Pla, and Andy Priaulx for the third-generation Ford GT’s inaugural racing season.
