In 2015, rally has been nothing but insanity on four wheels. There were a lot of wrecks, saves, and close calls, but teams are preparing to come out swinging in the 2016 season.
Jari-Matti Latvala was recently testing his Volkswagen Red Bull Polo R WRC for Rallye Monte Carlo 2016, and luckily there were cameras around to catch a glimpse of how quick the car is on tarmac. Weighing in at about 2,650 pounds, the Polo R WRC’s direct-injected 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, developing an FIA-regulated 318 horsepower, pulls it along very nicely. As current-generation WRC cars don’t have the massive horsepower of their Group B cousins, teams have to develop strategies to put as much power down as possible, while having as much stability and control of the vehicle as possible. This video is a testament to how the all-wheel drive systems in current-generation WRC cars really put all of the available power down.
It’s awesome to see Latvala sliding his Polo R WRC around a tight bend with him powering out, immediately gripping tarmac, and reaching triple digit speeds only a few short seconds later. The car’s tarmac suspension setup, which has significantly less travel than the gravel setup, does a great job of soaking up any bumps, little jumps, or any imperfections the road has to offer, which really contributes to the car looking really stable and solid throughout the video.
2016 will be a great year for rally, but we’re also really excited to see what 2017 has in store as well, as there have been rumors of nostalgic Group B essence. Bring on the 2016 season!
