Video: Gazoo Racing’s Limited Edition GT86 GRMN At The Ring

Gazoo Racing has built so many GT86-based concepts, racing prototype, and race car that we’ve long ago lost count. Toyota’s tuning arm, which also goes by the GRMN acronym, is up to its old tricks. It latest creation is road-going, limited edition of the car we know as the Scion FR-S. Unfortunately it’s one of those annoying Japan-only propositions. Gazoo is right at home at the Nurburgring in Germany where the GT86 GRMN made its debut. This iteration of the 86 comes sans turbocharger conversion but with a host of goodies.

The car sports some well-thought-out aero upgrades, including a large rear wing and front splitter while a cool carbon fiber hood adds some style points. Gazoo replaced some of the windows with plexiglass to save weight and Gazoo reports this and some other weight savings net a 100 pound drop in girth. As far as performance is concerned the Boxer engine has been treated to a high-flow intake and upgraded exhaust system. Low-friction internal parts are also on the mod list. For footwork Gazoo Racing has added wider wheels. They are the stock 17 inches in diameter but are wider at 8 inches to give the Toyota a bigger contact patch.

Gazoo also recalibrated the suspension and upgraded the brakes with ventilated discs at all four corners, with six-pot calipers at the front and four pistons at the rear. It also fitted a closer-ratio six-speed manual transmission to optimize performance.

The engine mods bump power from 200 horsepower to 216 while torque jumps from 151 lb-ft to 160. And to go with the power increase, weight is trimmed by a good 100 pounds. The bad news is the car will be produced in a run of only 100, and as mentioned it will only sold in Japan. As is the case with some of this limited edition the price tag does not meet sum total of what the car delivers. In this case the sticker price is $54,000 which is so high as to be borderline blasphemous.

The video shows accomplished driver Masahiko Kageyama discussing the car’s balance and performance in Japanese on the Green Death.
