There has never been a shortage of car-centric television shows and movies in America, but few have had as profound an effect on pop culture as Knight Rider. Starring a then-unknown David Hasselhoff in the role of Michael Knight, Knight Rider also featured the wise-cracking Pontiac Trans Am known as K.I.T.T. Though the original lasted just four seasons, fans have long clamored for a reboot or movie to wrap the story of Michael Knight up, and it looks like they just might get it.
Dropping on the web this week is a 90-second “trailer” for a project called Knight Rider Heroes, with both The Hoff and K.I.T.T. looking to reprise their roles. Beyond that though, we’re left with more questions than answers.
The only other information provided is a link to www.knightriderheroesmovie.com, seeming to imply that the project is heading for the silver screen rather than the boob tube. The trailer opens by discussing the closing of the Foundation for Law and Government (or FLAG), the original driving force behind the Knight Industries Two Thousand (K.I.T.T.), suggesting that the public justice organization then went underground. But FLAG is back, and so is Michael Knight and K.I.T.T.
Not making the return is Justin Bruening, who played the role of Mike Traceur (Michael Knight’s estranged son) in the 2008-09 reboot. Instead a mystery man can be seen talking to The Hoff at the very end of the trailer as K.I.T.T. non-chalantly drives itself into the meeting. There have been other efforts to revive Knight Rider, and even though none have matched the success of the original, apparently there’s room in the crowded halls of Hollywood for at least one more go.
We guess some people just can’t get enough of the Hoff.
