This 2JZ-powered kouki S14 has to be one of the cleaner dragsters competing in the small-tire class today. A combination of a giant 88 mm turbo and several stages on nitrous produces between 1,500-1,600 horsepower and utilizes a 12.4-inch drag slick to attempt to put the power down. Despite the massive balloons which extend beyond the rear bodywork, the car struggles to put the mountain-moving amount of torque to the ground, as we see in this video.
Competing against turbocharged Mustangs, GTOs, and even a funny car, the Nissan manages to hold its own and makes an incredible bark in the process. It has to be said that the engine note this particular 2JZ makes is more of a mid-range howl then the typical high-pitches shriek accompanied with a whistling turbo we’ve come to expect with tuned Supras. This car sounds a bit more like a tuned RB26DETT.
With an exhaust that exits from the hood, the car makes an impression on the starting line, bucking and spitting flame in anticipation of the green light. When this monster manages to achieve some traction, it simply rockets down the quarter mile. Other times, it spins one tire the length of the strip or drifts and squirms, looking for grip, and yet it somehow holds on in dramatic fashion. Some of the other entrants are not so lucky.
Screaming motors and fireballs aside, this drag event is filled with crashes, misses and some unintended lane sharing. Without a doubt, anyone willing to run these monsters down the drag strip are brave, and riding this bucking bull requires a little extra still.
