Daigo’s on a roll here in this beautifully-shot video at the Gunsai Cycle Center: favorite filming location of the Touge Showdown series. Though Daigo Saito has been campaigning some choice machinery in the past few years in Formula D, his car for this film is his old favorite, the Toyota JZX100 Chaser. What is astonishing his how fearless this man is: sliding a through a narrow, tree-lined pass in a car that is as long as the road is wide. The margin for error is minute.
For those unfamiliar with Saito, he’s made a career out of sliding the big Toyota sedans. To get the hefty Chaser going sideways regularly, his 1JZ motors have been known to produce around the 900 horsepower mark. Thankfully, we get to hear that turbocharged inline-six at full chat in quality audio. Any red-blooded enthusiast can’t help but revel in the lovely bark and accompanying turbocharger whistles and rattles.
Daigo’s hands, which move in a flurry on the steering wheel, are captured with clever editing that comprises some artistic interior-shots with the typical chase-cam so popular in drifting videos. The astute observer can’t help but notice that neither the tachometer nor the speedo work, so this may be one of his earlier “budget” builds. Though knowing Daigo’s choice in machinery, “budget” might be a term used very loosely.
What’s most obvious how quick he is into the corner. Unflappable, Saito initiates slides well before the corner entry with his handbrake, at times carrying in more speed than one would think possible. After watching the old Touge Showdown videos, some of the sections looked to be slid at the same speed as the racers. One thing’s certain, this guy has guts.
