Move over Mad Max there is a new sheriff in town. Meet Brad Tuohy, a professional drifter who competes in the Australian Drifting Grand Prix (ADGP) with his 2013 Toyota GT86, and an all-around bad ass. The dude pulled off every single mod on his tipsy Toyota in his home garage. We mean everything from swapping out the factory issue FA20 engine in favor of a LS2 to installing the two Rotrex superchargers … that’s right twin superchargers.
The engine is fed healthy servings of E85 Ethanol via huge 2,200 cc injectors and the small-block sports a trick long-runner Wilson intake manifold. The LS2 can be set-up to produce 500 to 700 horsepower to better match track conditions. The V8 is backed by a T-56 six-speed transmission and a Lexus IS300 rear end.
The Rotrex supercharger looks like a turbo on its compressor side and inside is its state of the art traction drive technology. Great speeds and low noise are just some of the advantages of traction drives over traditional gear transmissions. Traction drives transmit power through friction forces between its rolling elements.
The Rotrex patented traction drive uses an elastic annulus with a small pre-span to secure contact between the roller planets and the sun shaft with a reasonable force. The patented “ramp effect” increases efficiency and reliability in the transmission by regulating the torque transfer capability on demand through self-adjusting planet geometry.
Rotrex superchargers can be found in the aftermarket as centerpieces in boost solutions in HKS boost kits, Toyota Racing Development packages forcars and trucks, multiple applications from Jackson Racing, and as a factory approved upgrade for the CR-Z through Honda Performance Development.
