When you’ve spent the last 40 years racing cars, you might become a bit jaded when it comes to owning your own road car. How many top-tier drivers merely see road cars as slow, cumbersome and “inefficient” after spending their 20s and 30s driving the best out there? You might find it refreshing to know that some of these guys can still get their kicks the way most of us do, with road cars. Keiichi Tsuchiya is one of these few.
Always a fan of high-revving, normally-aspirated cars, Tsuchiya put on display his everyday ride, a new NSX-R. The NSX is, as it is in the States, a bit of a status-symbol but knowing the Drift King, this car will be put through its paces and not merely a Sunday cruiser. The standard suspension has been updated with dampers from his own brand, Kei Office. Not simply a track day weapon, the NSX has been fitted with a stereo system so the infamous womanizer can have a bit of ambiance on his dates.
So his Honda has been tinkered with slightly and made into a well-rounded road car. But to put this car the test, Tsuchiya and his co-anchor Naoki Hattori stage a short race between Drift King’s NSX-R and a “stock” NSX-R. Note that this car, piloted by Hattori, is a Honda press car and you can expect it to be – probably – a little faster than the typical car you’d grab from a dealership. As you can see, the motor in the press car is much stronger and despite Tsuchiya’s car exhibiting better composure in the quick corners, Hattori is able to reel Tsuchiya in down the straights. Drift King mentions that he will only sell this suspension kit publicly if he manages to beat a Honda press car. Watch and find out if he does.
