We’ve all seen crashes at motorsport events on television, or in person. When you see that crash, it’s shocking, to say the least.
Some accidents are far worse than others, and this accident falls into the “far worse” category. Jorg Viebahn and Rosen Daskalov were racing toward the checkered flag in this past weekend’s European GT4 Series race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria when they both collided hard with the wall coming out of the final turn. It looks like Viebahn in the Aston Martin was trying to squeeze out Daskalov in the Sin R1 with the little room he had, but it looked like Daskalov kept pushing forward despite Viebahns maneuver.
The rear end of Viebahn’s Aston Martin made contact with the front end of Daskalov’s Sin R1, causing the cars to uncontrollably make a break toward the wall coming out of the final turn. Right as both cars collide with the wall, there is instantly a plume of dirt, body parts, and mechanical parts flying through the air, landing scattered all over that section of track. The amazing part is that Viebahn and Daskalov walked away from the crash, but just by looking at their cars, it doesn’t seem like they would’ve been so lucky if this crash were to happen over ten years ago.
This crash is an eye-opener, an eye-opener to how much the cars and safety equipment have improved over the years and how they greatly protect the driver from harm. A nasty crash, indeed, but both drivers still have their limbs, and more importantly, their lives.
